PMS (premenstrual syndrome)

About a third of women in the UK will suffer from PMS symptoms which have a negative impact on their work, relationships and self image. Most women experience mild symptoms each month which do not affect their wellbeing and quality of life. Women with symptoms must show a definite pattern related to their menstrual cycle in order to confirm that these are hormone related. Recording symptoms over a couple of months helps to determine a pattern.

Initial treatment involves making lifestyle changes (such as exercise, diet, complementary therapies). Other treatments can include things like cognitive behavioural therapy (this is a talking therapy with a trained professional), combined contraceptive pill, antidepressants and other treatment options.

If you feel your symptoms are impacting on your relationships, work or daily life, please discuss with your GP.  For a helpful leaflet written by specialists at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) click here.
