Adolescent Gynaecology

Please note, you must be referred to this specialist clinic by your GP.

Who the clinic is suitable for

We help young women (age 14-17) with problems such as heavy or irregular periods, abnormal bleeding, no periods or abdominal/pelvic pain.  We know that period problems can stop them attending school or taking part in sports and can also affect relationships with your family and friends.

What the clinic offers

You will be seen by a gynaecologist who will offer advice and management of common period problems experienced by teenagers.  When you attend the clinic you may have investigations such as blood tests, gynaecological examination and an ultrasound scan.

How to access this service

Most GPs will help teenagers with period problems so you should always attend your GP for advice in the first instance. Your GP can refer you to this gynaecology service if they think you would benefit from specialist help.

What you can do whilst you wait for an appointment

It may be worth trying mefenamic acid or tranexamic acid tablets to help painful or heavy periods.  These can be prescribed by your GP.
