Gynaecology

What the clinic offers

You will see a gynaecologist who will investigate and treat common gynaecological problems.  In the clinic you may have an examination, an ultrasound scan or biopsy or blood tests or smear test or swabs. You may have a minor procedure such as inserting an intra-uterine system (coil). These can usually all be done even if you are bleeding.

These tests will only be done if your doctor feels that these are needed and if you are willing to have them done.  If there is not enough time at the appointment, or if you prefer, the tests can be rescheduled for another appointment. 

If any of these tests are done, the doctor will tell you when and how you will get the results. 

Who the clinic is suitable for

Your GP can refer you to this Gynaecology service as an alternative to attending other Gynaecology clinics in NHS Lothian hospitals. The clinic is for women who have common gynaecological problems such as heavy or irregular periods, abnormal bleeding, abdominal/pelvic pain and vulval skin problems. The clinic has a particular interest in problems related to contraception.

Who the clinic is not suitable for

This Gynaecology clinic does not deal with bladder issues or undertake surgical procedures for cancer.

What you can do whilst you wait for an appointment

It may be appropriate to try mefenamic acid or tranexamic acid tablets to help painful or heavy periods.   These can be prescribed by your GP.
