Genital Skin Problems

We are unable to offer direct access appointments for the Chalmers Specialist Genital skin clinic. If you think you have a genital skin condition, please discuss with your GP in the first instance. If they consider that specialist input is required, they will then refer you for secondary care review (at the Chalmers Genital Skin clinic, Gynae service Vulval skin clinic, Urology or Dermatology).

If you are referred by your GP to the Chalmers Genital Skin clinic, we will contact you with an appointment. Please note that this could take up a few months. If your referral is deemed urgent you will be offered an earlier appointment.

Anyone can suffer from genital skin problems.

These are not usually caused by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) but are often caused by the products that are used to wash our bodies and our clothes.

We have two patient information leaflets that you may find useful – male washing advice and female washing advice.

You will be able to get the products we suggest from your local pharmacy or your GP will be able to prescribe them for longer term use.

People who experience vaginal discharge and itch as well as redness and discomfort in the genital area should also read our leaflet on thrush.

If you have vaginal secretions (sometimes known as discharge) and you’re not sure if they are normal, please read this leaflet.

If you think you are at risk of an STI, then please contact us so we can arrange tests for these infections. However, most genital skin rashes are not due to an STI.

If your genital skin problem does not improve after following the advice in the above leaflets and using the suggested self sourced treatments, you can ask your GP to refer you to Chalmers so that you can be seen in one of our clinics for assessment.

We do not deal with skin problems that do not affect the genital area.
