Female Sterilisation

This means blocking your fallopian tubes to prevent pregnancy. It should be considered a permanent procedure (not reversed) and is less effective than contraceptive methods like the implant and intrauterine contraception. It involves a general anaesthetic and an operation, and is not offered at our clinics. If you are interested in sterilisation you can ask your GP to refer you to one of our medical gynaecology clinics to discuss this. We need to talk to you first, to make sure you know all about procedure and alternatives. We will be happy to send you on to a hospital gynaecologist if you decide you want the procedure. Most gynaecologists will not conduct the procedure in individuals who are very overweight (as this increases the risk of the operation), who are younger than 30, especially if they have no children (as there is  a high regret rate).

Vasectomy

This is when the tubes, which allow passage of sperm from the testes to the penis, are blocked and cut to prevent sperm from getting out. It is a small operation which can be done at our clinics. You just need a local anaesthetic injection to make it painless. If you are interested in vasectomy you can ask your GP to refer you or you can contact us yourself to arrange this. We need to talk to you first, to make sure you know all about the vasectomy. We can then make a date for you to come back for the operation.
