Injection

Injectable contraception can be reliable and convenient and is  widely used. There are 2 very similar products used in the UK; Depo Provera® and Sayana Press®. See below for more details.

Most general practices offer Depo Provera®. Some provide Sayana Press® too.

Injectable Contraception (DepoProvera®)

Often called ‘the jag’, this is very reliable, convenient contraception. The injection is given every 13 weeks by a nurse or doctor into your buttock muscle. You might find your bleeding is irregular to start with. Periods can disappear altogether after you have had two or three injections.

Injectable Contraception (Sayana Press®)

This is a newer injectable contraceptive method. In most ways it is very similar to Depo Provera®, the big difference is that it is injected just under the skin of your abdomen (tummy) or the front of your thigh. 

Sayana® can be injected by a doctor or nurse, but the injection technique is easy for you to learn to do yourself. That gives you the choice of injecting at home. When you have learnt how to do it, you can order supplies and only have to check in with the clinic once a year, with Depo Provera® you have to check in with the clinic four times a year.
