Progestogen-only Pill

If you would like to start or continue on the progestogen only pill then please speak to your GP in the first instance. If you are unable to access this contraception from your GP then you can contact us to request a call back appointment. You can also get supplies of the progestogen only pill from pharmacies.

This is sometimes called the mini-pill. It only contains the hormone progestogen. It doesn’t contain any estrogen and so does not have the same risks as the combined pill. It is therefore often used by individuals who cannot take the combined pill for medical reasons. There are different types of progestogen-only pill and the doctor or nurse will discuss which one will suit you best. The most commonly used progestogen only pill (one that contains desogestrel) works by stopping the ovary from releasing an egg every month (ovulation).
