Before your Coil/IUD removal appointment

Please read the information below carefully

  • You must have no unprotected sex for the 7 DAYS before IUD removal (using condoms or no sex is fine). This is because there would be a risk of pregnancy if we did remove the IUD.
  • Please make sure you can feel the threads of your IUD. If you cannot feel them (or you’re not sure)- please book an appointment with your practice nurse to check first. Your GP or practice nurse may also be able to then remove the IUD. If you already know that your threads are not visible (e.g., your GP has checked them already)- then please ask your GP for a referral to Chalmers. This ensures you are offered an appointment in an appropriate clinic.
  • If you need another method of contraception- please read the information about each method (Contraception | Lothian Sexual Health). We will try to start your chosen method at the time your IUD is removed but it might not be possible in the same appointment. Your GP or practice nurse may be able to start your new method before the IUD is removed.
  • If you are using the IUD for any other reason than contraception (e.g., you are using it to help with heavy periods, pain, HRT)- you should phone for advice before booking this appointment (Tel: 0131 5361070). It may not be suitable for you to have the IUD removed in this clinic.
  • If you are having pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding with your IUD- it may not be suitable for you to be seen in this clinic. You may need review in a more specialist clinic. Please call for advice (Tel: 0131 5361070)– If you are taking certain medications (e.g., blood thinners, heart medication) or have other health problems (e.g., heart problems) it may better for you to be seen in one of our other clinics to make sure it is safe to remove your IUD. If you are not sure please contact us to discuss before booking an appointment (Tel: 0131 5361070).
