How to get tested for STIs

Routine testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is usually done using a Self Sampling Kit.

Depending on your individual needs, your kit may include:

  • Swab or urine tests for chlamydia and gonorrhoea
  • A blood test for HIV and syphilis

Your Self Sampling Kit is prepared specifically for you. Before we send it, we will ask you some questions to make sure you receive the tests that are appropriate for you.

How does the Self Sampling Kit work?

We can post your Self Sampling Kit to your address.

When your kit arrives:

  1. Follow the instructions included with the kit.
  2. Collect your samples.
  3. Package your samples using the packaging provided.
  4. Return your samples as instructed.

The kit contains the packaging and instructions you need to return your samples.

If you do not have a regular address, or you would prefer not to have your kit posted to you, please let us know. We can arrange for you to collect your kit from us.

You will receive your results through the Chalmers automated results service.

When will I need to attend a clinic?

A Self Sampling Kit may not be suitable for everyone.

We may ask you to attend a clinic if:

  • You have painful or distressing symptoms.
  • You need additional tests.
  • You need vaccinations.
  • Your symptoms or circumstances require a more detailed assessment.

If you are unsure which type of appointment or testing you need, contact us for advice.

HIV self-testing at home

If you would like to test for HIV at home, you can order an HIV self-test from the Terrence Higgins Trust.

These tests can provide a result in around 15 minutes.

An HIV self-test is different from the HIV blood test included in some of our Self Sampling Kits. If you have recently been exposed to HIV or are concerned about a possible exposure, contact a sexual health service for advice rather than relying on a self-test alone.

Trans and non-binary outreach testing

We welcome trans and non-binary people at all of our sexual health services.

If you would prefer to attend a service specifically for trans and non-binary people, we also offer a dedicated community-based clinic at LGBT Health and Wellbeing in Leith.

The clinic offers:

  • STI testing if you do not have symptoms
  • HIV PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis)
  • Contraception
  • Cervical screening

The service provides a supportive, welcoming and inclusive environment, with staff experienced in providing healthcare for trans and non-binary people.
