How to get tested for STIs

Routine check-ups for sexually transmitted infections are now usually done using a Self Sampling Kit. The kit includes tests for gonorrhoea, Chlamydia (using swab or urine samples) along with blood tests for HIV and syphilis.

We post a Self Sampling Kit to your address. When you get it you should do the test(s) following the instructions and return it to your GP. All the packaging you need is included and there will be instructions on returning the sample to your GP. You will still access your results through our automated results line via Chalmers.  If you don’t have a regular address, or you don’t want the Self Sampling Kit posted to you, don’t worry – let us know and we can arrange for you to collect it from us. Your results will be available on our automated telephone results line a week later.

Self Sampling Kits are made individually for your specific needs, so we’ll speak to you to find out a bit more information before we send yours out. If you have painful or distressing symptoms, if you need extra tests or vaccinations, or things are more complicated, we may arrange for you to come into a clinic for testing.

Trans and Non-Binary Outreach Testing

We welcome trans and non-binary people to all of our sexual health services, but if you would prefer to attend a service specifically for trans and non-binary people, we also run a dedicated community-based clinic at LGBT Health and Wellbeing in Leith. This clinic offers:

• Asymptomatic STI testing

• Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV

• Contraception

• Cervical screening (smear tests)

You’ll be able to access care in a relaxed, supportive, affirming environment with staff experienced in trans and non-binary healthcare.
