Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver.

How you get it: 

Condomless penetrative sex, sharing contaminated needles or razors, babies born to infected mothers or by receiving an (untested) blood transfusion. 

A vaccination is available which can prevent someone getting Hepatitis B. The vaccination is recommended for those who are at greater risk including: men who have sex with men, health care workers, injecting drug users and people who work in the sex industry.

Symptoms: 

Often there are no symptoms. 

Treatment: 

You would need to be reviewed by a hospital doctor for further assessment.  Your GP can refer you for this.

My sexual partner has Hepatitis B– what should I do?

You should be tested and may be eligible for vaccination.
