Accessing the Gender Identity Clinic (Referrals)

Eligibility

At the Chalmers GIC we only see patients who are over 17 years of age and registered with a GP in our catchment area (NHS Borders, Fife or Lothian)

If you are under 17 years of age you are still eligible for Gender care, but this will be provided by Sandyford Gender Identity Clinic. Your GP can refer you to us at Chalmers and we will transfer your referral to Sandyford on your behalf.

Joining the GIC waiting list

We ask that you access this service through a referral from your GP. We work in partnership with your GP throughout your contact with the clinic, and this helps to ensure that we know all about your health and medications and so that you continue to be well supported.

We understand that there may be circumstances where someone does not want to approach their usual GP, and in this situation we will suggest that you consider approaching an alternative GP. 

Transferring your care to us

If you are already registered with another NHS gender identity clinic, we may be able to accept a transfer to us. You must be living in and registered with a GP in our catchment area (NHS Borders, Fife or Lothian).

If you are registered with a GIC in Scotland please ask them to transfer your care to us.

If you are registered with a GIC in England, Northern Ireland or Wales please ask your GP to refer you to us and provide copies of the following documents:

  • your assessment and latest clinic letter if already being treated at another GIC
  • a GIC letter confirming your registration date if you are on the waiting list

If you are already being treated at another GIC we will contact you to offer a follow up appointment as clinically apporpriate.

If you are on the waiting list, we will take your original date into consideration.
