NHS Lothian Sexual Health Training and Resource List 2023
This resource has been developed through the NHS Lothian Sexual and Reproductive Health Service to support Lothian-based staff and volunteers to increase their confidence in providing sexual health information, advice and services at a foundation level.
This document lists a variety of foundation level options to gain knowledge and understanding in regards to sexual health and wellbeing. We are in the process of adding more in-depth, specialist and clinically based opportunities.

Diploma of Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health Care (DFSRH)
We offer training for the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare’s qualifications.
The Diploma of SRH is a broad qualification covering contraception, STIs and wider issues in SRH. This training is open to both doctors and nurses.
It is suitable for established GPs and for GP trainees in the later stages of training. It is not normally compatible with FY training posts. It is also appropriate for Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist trainees. The Diploma is also suitable for Nurses working in general practice and in specialty Sexual Health services. (However primary care nurses also have the option of doing a broader qualification; The Graduate Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Healththrough Napier University.
The Diploma of FSRH training builds knowledge, skills and attitudes through independent theory learning based around online resources and online testing of knowledge (eKA). This is followed by application of SRH knowledge in training clinics and OSCE scenarios, to demonstrate the clinician has the knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide excellent SRH care in community and hospital settings.
The Diploma is a considerable time investment for busy clinicians. Please think carefully about how this will fit with you other commitments.

Insertion of IUD/IUS and Nexplanon
We offer training for professionals wanting to fit IUD/IUS and Subdermal contraceptive Implants (Nexplanon).
To ensure good baseline SRH knowledge, clinicians must already hold the Diploma of SRH or just pass the online eKA test.
Practical training for Nexplanon insertion and removal involves 3 clinical sessions, prior to which, e-learning covers a thorough theoretical background to the contraceptive method. Nurses and doctors can be trained to insert and remove Nexplanon.
Practical training for IUD and IUS provision is suitable for doctors and nurses. Between 5 and 7 clinical sessions are usually required and again this is underpinned by theory knowledge from doing free elearning online.

Graduate Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health
This qualification is suitable for primary care and specialist nurses wanting to extend their knowledge and competencies, and it is an alternative to the Diploma of the Faculty of SRH Click here for more details.
Midwifery Postpartum Contraceptive Training
Completing training in postpartum contraception will enable you to discuss and provide immediate postpartum contraception to the women in your care. You will be able to encourage and facilitate uptake of contraception before postnatal women go home from hospital or in the community following discharge. The training will enable you to use PGDs to administer postpartum contraception and you can also complete further training to insert contraceptive implants and intrauterine contraception.
The Training stages are outlined below:
Step 1
Complete the ‘Postpartum Contraception’ Learnpro Module 1.
This is recommended prior to administering Depo or POP and also prior to implant practical training
Step 2
If you would like to insert Nexplanon then after completing Module 1 above, you then need to complete ‘Module 17’ via e-Learning for Healthcare (eLFH)
Register with e-Learning for Healthcare for access to the free e-SRH modules. You need an NHS email address to do this.
Once this has been completed you can then arrange practical implant training at Chalmers Centre.
Step 3
If you would like to insert postpartum intrauterine contraception (PPIUC) at the time of delivery then you need to complete ‘Postpartum Contraception’ Learnpro Module 2 (after completing Module 1 above).
You would then arrange practical training within your workplace.
Update on Intrauterine Contraception
This free update is provided once a year and is aimed at GPs and Practice Nurses who already fit IUD/IUS in general practice in the Lothians.
The sessions always include discussion of up to date guidance on IUD/S provision and updates on new products as well as a chance to bring cases/questions for discussion.
The update meeting is suitable CPD to maintain certification in IUD/S provision. We also provide powerpoint presentations and other update resources to clinicians in Lothian who can’t make it to the update meeting. This is also acceptable CPD to maintain certification.

Annual Practice Nurse Sexual and Reproductive Health Update
An annual update for practice nurses is available. The programme gives a regular update on hot topics in sexual and reproductive health and varies each year to reflect changes in evidence relating to clinical care.

Young People’s Sexual Health Training
Healthy Respect currently offers sexual health training opportunities for all staff and volunteers across Lothian working with young people. The new training programme replaces the SHARE and SHARE Special training and has been redesigned to meet a wider range of needs.
The training enables staff and volunteers from a range of settings to best meet young people’s sexual health needs, as well as equip Learning & Teaching staff to deliver current, relevant Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) education with confidence. The training reflects current research with young people, findings from the Healthy Respect review of services and national developments.
Programme Outline
Participants are required to do a minimum of two days training.
Day One: Young People’s Sexual Health (CORE) brings staff from a range of agencies and professional backgrounds together for training and to share practice.
Day Two: Participants choose from the following modules (a minimum of one module is required)
- Young People’s Sexual Health (Learning & Teaching)
- Young People’s Sexual Health (Learning Disabilities/Additional Support Needs)
- Young People’s Sexual Health (Community-based Services)
