What are my options?
Abortion process – What will happen?
This ‘roadmap’ details the possible routes through the Choices clinic and the treatment options available.

This leaflet provides an overview of all of the treatment options in NHS Lothian, as do the links below:
- Early Medical Abortion: up to 11+6 weeks
- Medical Abortion in Hospital: 12 to 20 weeks
- Surgical Abortion
If you are undecided about having an abortion, you can discuss this with the nurse during your appointment. You can then be referred in to the ‘options’ clinic for a facilitated decision making session.
If you are undecided about the type of abortion you wish to have, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have a useful section for helping people understand their options surrounding abortion. Click here to visit the website – please note surgical abortion is not available after 13 weeks in NHS Lothian. This is also shown in the diagram below.
You can ask more about the treatment options during your appointment; however a second appointment may be necessary to arrange your care.
