Support after an Abortion
The Choices Service at Chalmers offers support to people who wish to explore their feelings following an abortion.
The service provides a safe environment for women to talk about their feelings and work through any difficult issues associated with the abortion. Support can also be provided to the partners of women who have had an abortion.
Women who have had an abortion may experience a range of feelings. Many feel relief, while other feelings may include emptiness, sadness, guilt, loss or depression. These feelings may come immediately, or they can surface months, even years later. It may be difficult to talk to friends and family for fear of being judged, or because ‘I should be over it by now’. Being unable to express these feelings can lead to isolation and depression.
An unintended pregnancy and a abortion can also be testing situations for those in relationships. While relationships can be strengthened by sharing the experience, some people can find it hard to communicate afterwards and may need support. Women can attend alone, or with their partners. Men may also experience difficulties following an abortion and are welcome to attend alone or with their partner. Please refer to our Support after a Termination leaflet for more information.
Support is available at Chalmer’s Sexual Health Centre. Call 0131 536 2105 and ask for an appointment.
